Join us for Advent and Christmas
Services
Blue christmas
We know this year, and for some not just this year, has been difficult to navigate the holidays with the grief and absences left in your hearts. We wanted to take this time to invite you to our Blue Christmas celebration here at Salem. Our service will also be livestreamed for anyone unable to attend in person or if you'd like to invite any out of town family members to worship with you. Worship will start at 7 PM on December 19th.
At this meaningful worship experience, we name the grief that
exists and co-exist in it for a time. We thank God for the time, love, and
memories we've been able to share with our loved ones. We share our broken
hearts with God, openly communicating the emotions surrounding that
grief. We prepare our hearts to stay present in the life before us, while
celebrating and longing for the life behind us. And we revel in the grace
and hope that we will celebrate with them again.

Christmas Eve
This year we will be celebrating the birth of Christ with one, family centric, meaningful worship service.
Christmas Eve worship will begin at 5 PM on December 24th. Worship will also be livestreamed for anyone unable to attend in person or if you'd like to invite any out of town friends or family members to worship with you. We'll join together in hymns of praise and celebration, light the final Advent candle, hear the story of the birth of our Lord, and close the service with Silent Night sung in unison by candlelight from the Christ Advent candle. It will be a poignant, reverent-at-times, honest, wholesome, fun service to be enjoyed and shared by all.

all together worship
Join us for a blended, "All Together", service at 10 AM on December 29th. On months with 5 Sundays, Salem joins for one service to worship together. This is a unique offering that allows us to get to know those who prefer other worship styles, and join as one in honor and praise to our God. We all have our own thoughts, ideas, preferences, and more - but the Spirit is present when and where we gather. After worship concludes on these Sundays, we sit down for a meal together in Fellowship Hall. As Methodists, food is often joked about as the "unspoken sacrament" because we find community gathered around a table with fellow believers, and enjoy getting to know our faith community in that setting. Feel free to join in our communing with a dish to share, if you so choose - and if not, there's still a seat for you at the table.
Salem is a 'no matter what' church
Salem is a "no matter what" church. You do not need to "check off any boxes" to join us for any service or occasion. Salem is a welcoming, inviting, inclusive community - now, we know most churches say that, so please know that we take hospitality seriously and genuinely wish to be a place for all people. No matter what. We are, God is. There is no prerequisite to belong, be part of and be a participant in worship here at Salem. We invite you; just as you are, to be here, to feel welcome and to be present.
Project linus
Project Linus is a nationally recognized non-profit with a local chapter that serves Cedar Rapids, Iowa City, and Waterloo area. All of the blankets are handmade and stay here locally to children in need. They go to different facilities and hospitals like Four Oaks, shelters, Stead University of Iowa Children's Hospital, the Ronald McDonald House, Covenant, etc.. We love supporting this loving organization and being home to the local Cedar Rapids area's Christmas Blanket Making Party.
We encourage you to bring some NEW fleece to help make blankets with. The minimum is 1.5 yards per piece and you need TWO pieces. Please have them pre-cut. Typically a solid colored bottom piece and a matching fun print for the top. These blankets go for all age ranges so any design is welcome. The only thing that's not allowed is that super cozy soft fleece - it makes a mess when cutting. The best type is called "no pill". You can find fleece at Walmart, JoAnn Fabrics, Hobby Lobby, Michaels, lots of places! Some even have kits you can purchase.
Come in whatever you're comfortable, PJs, whatever! Bring a snack to share if you're able, a pair of scissors if you can (we'll label them so you get them back if they get moved around), a bring a friend or four!
