Who we are
Here's the deal, Salem cares about one thing more than anything else; Jesus Christ. It's truly that simple! It's what's brought us all together to create this family of individuals that have found hope in Jesus. Our desire and mission is to invite, include and involve as many of our community as possible to experience that same family, hope, and freedom.
Salem Staff
Say hello to our staff at Salem Church.
Where we come from
Our roots go as deep as 1879. Then we were Zion United Evangelical Church. After merging with Immanuel Evangelical in 1927, the congregation took the name First Evangelical Church.
A national merger in 1946 of the Evangelical Church and the Church of the United Brethren in Christ led to another new name for the congregation – the Salem Evangelical United Brethren Church. At that time, Cedar Rapids also had a First Church of the United Brethren in Christ – later called St. Andrews – so First Evangelical took the name Salem to avoid confusion.
A final name change occurred in 1968 when the Evangelical United Brethren denomination merged with the Methodist Church to form the United Methodist Church.
Where we're headed
We offer opportunities for children, youth, and adults to grow in faith and practice as a follower of Jesus.
We exist to make disciples of Jesus who then transform the world. So we encourage everyone to serve not only within the walls of the church but beyond, transforming the world.
